# Google Consent Mode v2 on every plan

Consentl sends Google Consent Mode v2 signals on every plan, including Free, with regional defaults, and Meta, Microsoft and TikTok signals on Pro and higher.

## What Google requires

Since March 2024 Google requires advertisers who use Google Ads, or Google Analytics linked to Google Ads, to send consent signals for visitors in the European Economic Area and the UK. Without them, features such as ads personalisation, remarketing and conversion modelling stop working for those visitors. Consent Mode v2 uses four signals:

| Signal | What it controls |
| --- | --- |
| `ad_storage` | Cookies for advertising |
| `analytics_storage` | Cookies for analytics |
| `ad_user_data` | Sending user data to Google for advertising |
| `ad_personalization` | Personalised advertising and remarketing |

## How Consentl sends the signals

The Consentl loader runs first in the page's `<head>`. It sets **regional defaults** for the Google tags that load after it, from your rule for each region: denied where consent must come first. When the visitor decides, it sends an **update** with their choice, and a returning visitor's earlier choice is applied straight away. This works with gtag.js and with Google Tag Manager; for GTM there is a ready-made Consentl template.

## Meta, Microsoft and TikTok

On Pro and higher Consentl also sends consent signals to the **Meta Pixel**, **Microsoft UET** (Microsoft Ads consent mode) and the **TikTok Pixel**. Other tags follow the visitor's choice when you mark them, or automatically for known trackers on the Business plan.

## Check that it works

Open your site with the browser's developer tools or Google Tag Assistant: before any choice, the consent default appears before the first Google tag fires; after a choice, an update follows. Our [Google Tag Manager guide](https://consentl.com/docs/gtm) shows the setup step by step.

## FAQ

### Do I need Consent Mode if I only use Google Analytics?

If Google Analytics is linked to Google Ads, or you want modelled data for visitors who decline, yes. For visitors from the EEA and the UK, Google's EU user consent policy applies either way.

### Is Consent Mode a replacement for blocking?

No. Consent Mode tells Google tags what the visitor allowed; they adjust what they store and send. Tags of other vendors need their own signals or must be held back until consent.

### Does Consentl support IAB TCF?

No. Consentl supports Google Consent Mode v2 on every plan and the consent APIs of Meta, Microsoft and TikTok on Pro and higher, but not the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework.
