# Hold back trackers until visitors say yes

Hold back scripts, iframes and pixels until the visitor consents, by marking them on every plan or with automatic blocking of known trackers on Business.

## A banner alone does not stop tags

Most trackers start as soon as the page loads. If they run before the visitor chooses, they set cookies and send data without consent, whatever the banner says. Consentl holds tags back until the visitor allows their category, and starts them right after the choice.

## Mark a tag: every plan

Change the tag so the browser does not run it, and name its category:

```html
<script type="text/plain" data-consentl="marketing" src="https://ads.example.com/tag.js"></script>
<iframe data-consentl="marketing" data-src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/ID" title="Video"></iframe>
```

Categories are `preferences`, `analytics` and `marketing`. Nothing is requested until the category is granted, and a held tag runs once after consent. This is the only way to hold back a tag written directly in the page's HTML, because the browser fetches those before any script can stop them.

## Automatic blocking: Business

On the Business plan Consentl recognises known trackers (Meta Pixel, TikTok, Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, LinkedIn and more) when they are loaded by code, for example through Google Tag Manager, and holds them back **before they are requested**. You can add your own **blocking rules** ("URL contains …") in the dashboard without touching the site. Page data of frameworks such as Next.js, Nuxt, Remix or SvelteKit is never held back.

## Check what still runs

Run the [cookie scanner](https://consentl.com/features/cookie-scanner): cookies it finds **before consent** that are not strictly necessary show a tag that still runs too early.

## FAQ

### Does Consentl block Google tags?

Google tags follow Google Consent Mode on every plan: they load but adjust what they store and send to the visitor's choice. You can also hold them back completely by marking them.

### Do I need to change my site's code?

Only for tags written in the page's HTML on Free and Pro. On Business, trackers loaded by code are held back automatically. Our platform guides show where tags live on each platform.
